Dermal Fillers Q & A

What are dermal fillers?

As you age, you lose volume in your face due to less production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, which give your skin elasticity, moisture, and strength. Because of this, your muscles are closer to the surface, which means your fine lines are more readily seen.

Dermal fillers are thick substances that are injected under your skin in order to restore volume and supplement the contours of your face. The FDA-approved solutions help fight aging by plumping sagging skin and reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

What can dermal fillers do?

Dermal fillers can help with the early signs of aging by:

  • Plumping thin lips
  • Reducing vertical lip lines
  • Enhancing sunken cheeks
  • Enhancing contours
  • Softening smile lines
  • Improving facial feature symmetry

What are the available dermal fillers?

SWFL Dermatology Plastic Surgery & Laser Center uses a variety of dermal fillers including Juvederm®, Restylane®, Radiessa®, Belotero®, and Sculptra®.

Your provider will determine the best choice for your dermal fillers after your consultation, during which you discuss your aesthetic goals and your medical history.

What happens during the procedure?

Your provider looks closely at your facial skin and appearance. They carefully place markings on your face to ensure the correct placement of the dermal filler injections. They may take photographs to document your results.

Each of your injection sites is then cleansed with an antibacterial cleaner. You then receive a numbing medication on the areas to be treated.

The dermal filler is injected under your skin in precise measurements. Your provider continually evaluates your response to the dermal fillers and injects additional filler wherever needed. The injections take just a few moments.

After your injection, you may experience some slight bruising and swelling. This is temporary and will fade within a few days, and you can return to your regular activities shortly afterward

How long do the results last?

You notice the effectiveness of the dermal filler immediately. Individual results vary, but you can typically expect to see Juvederm results for up to 18 months.

Some fillers last longer depending on where they are injected. Specifically, Juvederm Voluma and Juvederm Volbella can last up to two years.

Once your results fade, after a year or two, you can repeat your injections. Maintaining your overall health and the health of your skin will improve your results.
